Overpaint removal

Old restorations/ retouchings may also be present on the surface when removing the varnish layer. These in many cases discolour and hide the artist’s original brushwork and even extend far beyond the damage itself, as in the example on the left..

Consolidation

Lifting, flaking or delaminating paint can be frequently found on paintings. This weakening of the paint structure can occur due to a variety of factors, such as improper painting techniques or unsutable environmental conditions.

During the process of consolidation carefully chosen adhesive is applied to secure the detached, friable, lifting, or otherwise insecure media in order to stabilize and preserve original material.

The adhesive can be applied in different ways, via a brush, through a syringe or even by means of a fine mist in the case of matt and powdery paint.
