Backing boards

The application of a backing board to a reverse of a painting is a very simple and cost-efficient measure that provides protection against damage from blows to the back and from vibration during transit. It also buffers against rapid changes in humidity and prevents dirt and debris from falling between the lower bar of the auxiliary support and the canvas.

Lion and Tiger uses inert materials that are stable and do not interact with the artwork. Lined paintings receive a simple hardboard backing board. On unlined or particulary fragile paintings backing boards are attached that consist of a hardboard backing board with an additional foam insert that fills the space between the canvas and the hardboard.
